Breastfeeding education has always played a big part in the WIC program at the New Madrid County Health Department. Prenatal women are encouraged to give their babies the best start in life through breastfeeding.

Breastfed babies are healthier and require fewer Doctor visits. Breastfed babies are less likely to have diarrhea, earaches, allergies, and less spitting up. Preparation and clean-up time are much easier for breastfeeding moms. Breastfeeding creates a special bond between mom and infant.

The Health Department has also received a grant to provide a breastfeeding peer counselor to assist our WIC clients that are planning to breastfeed or are already breastfeeding. The Health Department also has a breast pump loan program through the WIC office. Moms that are breastfeeding may check out a breast pump with a deposit of $25.00. The deposit is returned when the breast pump is returned undamaged and clean.
